Albert Square Drain Cover

Following a city-wide competition, I was commissioned by Manchester City Council to design a permanent cast iron installation for the historic regeneration of Albert Square.

My design was selected to feature in one of Europe’s most significant civic spaces as part of a large-scale heritage restoration project. The illustration serves as a detailed iconographic narrative of Greater Manchester’s global contributions, synthesizing 14 distinct milestones; ranging from the splitting of the atom and the discovery of graphene to the formation of the Football League.

To ensure the design’s success when cast in iron, I carefully managed line weights and textures, translating a detailed 60cm circular composition into a durable, tactile piece of public art.
